Starbacks has opened signing store in Kunitachi, Tokyo on June 27, 2020. This store, named "nonowa kunitachi", is a place we all can be just ourself and a symbol of diversity & inclusion of Starbacks.
Takafumi Minaguchi, CEO of Starbacks Coffee Japan said "The concept of this store is infinite possibillities. This store is just our dream. I hope this store will be the place that deaf can be just themselves and have their future or dream. Furthermore, all the people visiting this store can be aware of something new."
Before opening
For a while, the deaf partners of Starbacks had carried out "Sign language cafe", "Coffee seminor by sign language", and so on. After that, it had been promoted to open "nonowa Kunitachi" by them.
It was quite important vision for them to open the store they can be active. Hence their dreams have been come true through opening this store.
Why Kunitachi?
"nonowa" has opened in Kunitachi, not in the town with many cars and pedestrians. That is because Kunitachi town has the school for the deaf and accept the deaf culture. It means the town has promoted community development which is inclusive and confortable to live in.
